Electric Bosch CX bike riders experience enhanced power and torque from a recent free firmware update, yet some users, including myself, have found it challenging to attain the full 100Nm, a situation seemingly not unique.

The latest firmware update for the Bosch CX Gen 5 motor has been rolled out, offering significant improvements in power delivery and security features for e-bike riders. Here's what you need to know about the update and troubleshooting steps to ensure a smooth installation.

The update introduces the new EMTB+ mode, a significant step forward in power delivery from Bosch. This mode pairs Extended Boost or overrun from EMTB mode with the full power of Race mode, providing improved traction and handling. Additionally, the battery can now be digitally locked when the bike is turned off, potentially deterring theft.

However, it's important to note that while riders with the older Gen 4 CX Smart System motor can get the eMTB+ mode, they will not receive the power boost that comes with the Gen 5 motor. The Gen 5 motor can now generate 400W to your 100W, reducing the need to pedal as hard to get full power, and can be updated to 750W peak power.

Troubleshooting the firmware update involves several steps. First, ensure your device is compatible and that you have sufficient battery power and a stable internet connection. Use Bosch's official software or mobile apps for the update, carefully following the instructions provided. If you encounter errors during the update, record any error messages for reference, restart the bike or the app, and retry the update.

After the update, verify that the firmware version matches the one expected for 100Nm torque and EMTB+ mode. Test the EMTB+ mode to ensure it functions correctly, and check if the motor achieves the full 100Nm torque as expected. If issues persist, contact Bosch support or your e-bike’s manufacturer for specific troubleshooting advice.

The update also provides access to the new EMTB+ app with additional features. Both torque and peak power are adjustable via the Flow app sliders. Users have reported being unable to access the EMTB+ mode and the full 100Nm of torque, but performance upgrades may take several days to become visible.

For those with the Gen 5 motor, the update can be performed through the Bosch Flow e-bike app. To get the new firmware update, users need to download or update the Bosch flow app to version 1.28, then follow the instructions to update the motor.

It's worth noting that the update is officially available for bikes with the model year 2026 and onwards, but Bosch has a history of making its improvements backwards compatible. The new subscription service called Flow+ provides data such as the number of rides, distance traveled, riding time, and elevation, but Garmin offers similar features for free.

As always, it's essential to keep your apps and software updated to avoid compatibility issues and monitor for further updates that may address issues with previous updates. For detailed troubleshooting, reaching out to Bosch support or a local authorized service center may provide specific guidance tailored to your situation.

  1. The new firmware update for smartphones, specifically the Bosch Flow e-bike app, allows users with the Gen 5 motor to install the latest upgrade for their e-bike, providing access to the new EMTB+ mode and digitally locking the battery when the bike is turned off.
  2. Gadget enthusiasts, in particular smartphone and gadget users, might find the new EMTB+ app a valuable addition to their devices, as it offers adjustable torque and peak power via sliders, although some users have experienced issues accessing the EMTB+ mode and the full 100Nm of torque after the update.
