The latest edition of Skoda's premium model, the Superb iV, now boasts an enhanced plug-in hybrid drive. Boasting a larger battery, the top-tier Superb iV is capable of covering over 100 kilometers on pure electric power. Targeting both corporate car drivers and daily commuters, this updated Superb offers a compelling blend of style, practicality, and sustainability.

Tracing its roots back to 1934, the Superb indeed carries a traditional Czech pedigree. The vehicle was halted in 1949 by the new Soviet management at Skoda, who deemed the model excessively western and pricey. revived in 1999 by Volkswagen, the Superb is now in its sixth incarnation. Although the VW Passat is a significant gene donor in engine and interior, the vehicle still retains the signature Skoda identity in service of clever details.

Skoda's latest Superb marks a substantial step in the brand's journey towards an electric-focused future. Although fully electric Skoda models like Enyaq and Enyaq iV are already successful, it's taking some time for SUV models to arrive. For immediate gratification, the new Superb presents a practical plug-in hybrid solution. A 1.5L four-cylinder gasoline engine combines with an 85 kW electric motor, generating 150 kW/204 PS. While it's not a fully electric vehicle, the battery now offers an impressive 27.5 kWh, more than double that of its predecessor. The internal combustion engine enables over 100 kilometers of range without consuming a single drop of fuel, making it a sensible choice for urban commuters.

Plenty of Space for the Whole Family

Growing by 4 cm to 4.9 meters, the new Superb is significantly roomier, with a generous 2.85-meter wheelbase ensuring ample legroom in the back. In addition to improved space, the vehicle is also slightly narrower, simplifying production at the shared factory in Bratislava, Slovakia. This partnership between Skoda and VW also saves costs, as the fourth-generation Passat, now exclusively available as an estate, was more expensive to produce than the Superb.

Sleek Design and Top-Tier Safety Features

Changes in the latest Superb are subtle but impactful. Slimmer main headlights and rear lights, enhanced by a colored crystalline element called Crystallinium, complement the LED matrix headlights, forging a three-dimensional effect. Inside, the range of assistance systems has expanded to flagship level, boasting curve and intersection assistants, proactive cyclist protection, up to ten airbags, and more. Drivers can look forward to a more functional and spacious interior, adorned with a 10.25-inch display displaying essential data and a larger central screen measuring 13 inches.

The loss of the traditional gearshift lever is a notable design change. The new model embraces an electronic shifter and steering wheel-mounted controls, freeing up extra space in the front. Though it may take some getting used to, fans will soon appreciate the enhanced interior space and advanced control system.

Finally, the Superb's drive satisfies with precise steering, robust brakes, and an unobtrusive yet efficient interplay between engine and electric power. Drivers can opt for an all-electric mode, or choose to maintain the current charge level using the combustion engine when approaching environmental zones. All in all, the Superb offers a modern, driver-friendly driving experience that may entice SUV aficionados to reconsider their preferences. So long as you remember to charge it, the new Superb iV offers a genuinely green driving experience.
