Elon Musk relinquishes his government roles.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk Resigns from Trump Administration

Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, has resigned from his advisory role on President Donald Trump's councils. According to a White House representative, Musk's "off-boarding" began on Wednesday, June 17th (local time).

Musk thanked the President for the opportunity to serve and expressed his disappointment in the administration's handling of social issues and policy decisions, particularly their response to racial justice protests. These disagreements led to Musk's decision to step down.

The tech billionaire's tenure as a special government employee at the Department of Government Efficiency was nearing its end, set to expire around May 30th. The Trump administration has stated that the efforts to restructure and reduce the federal government would continue, with the Doge agency playing a significant role.

In a conversation with CBS News, Musk criticized the costs of the Republican tax and budget laws, referencing the President's "Big Beautiful Bill" currently making its way through Congress. Musk deemed the bill detrimental to the Doge team's efforts to reduce the deficit.

Musk had earlier noted that his agency had been made the "punching bag" for various issues, facing criticism and accountability regardless of their involvement. This political turmoil, coupled with concerns from Tesla investors, may have contributed to Musk's decision to focus more on his companies and less on his role as Trump's advisor.

It is unclear if Musk had a formal farewell meeting or discussion with President Trump before resigning. The resignation was communicated through public statements and media. As the world's richest man, Musk has always defended his role as an unelected government representative, a position that granted him unprecedented authority to dismantle parts of the US government.

  1. Despite his resignation from the Trump Administration, Elon Musk's companies, particularly Tesla and SpaceX, could face implications in various business sectors influenced by political decisions, such as the ongoing debates on finance and taxation in the context of the Republican tax and budget laws.
  2. As the Commission has not yet adopted a proposal for a directive on the protection of workers from the risks related to exposure to ionising radiation, the absence of Musk, who has undergone extensive space travel, may impact the future discussions on this topic, particularly in the realm of technology and business.
  3. In the realm of general-news, Musk's decision to step down from his advisory role may signal a shift in the relationship between technology leaders and political administrations, with leaders like Musk prioritizing business interests and social justice issues over political alliance.
