Sagrada Familia Cross Installation Approaches
The Sagrada Familia, the iconic basilica in Barcelona, is set to receive a significant addition in August 2023. The installation of the cross for the main tower is imminent, marking a significant milestone in the construction of this architectural marvel.
The cross, a lightweight steel and glass construction, stands 17 meters high and 13.5 meters wide. It will be accessible to the public from 2027, offering a panoramic view of the Mediterranean metropolis. Inside the cross, an internal staircase and platform construction will provide visitors with a unique experience.
The cross's glass panels were manufactured in Spain and reflect sunlight, creating a shimmering effect that symbolizes the light of Christ. At night, the cross will be illuminated, with a beam of light emanating from each of its four arms, casting a beautiful glow over the city.
An elevator will take visitors up to the foot of the cross, making it accessible to all. The nearly 100-ton cross is planned to be installed piece by piece in the coming months.
The Sagrada Familia's construction, which started later than famous churches like the Ulm Minster, is expected to take about ten more years to complete, making it more than 150 years of construction time. The basilica was designed to not exceed the height of Montjuïc, the highest hill in Barcelona (177 meters).
Upon completion, the Sagrada Familia will have the world's tallest church tower, surpassing the Ulm Minster. The construction of the basilica is funded solely by donations and entrance fees.
Pope Leo XIV has been invited to the solemn mass on June 10, but it is unknown if he will attend. The official inauguration of the completed Sagrada Familia is planned for June 10, 2022, on the 100th anniversary of architect Antoni Gaudí's death.
Jordi Faulí, the leading architect, stated that Gaudí wanted the work of man not to surpass the work of God. This philosophy is evident in the Sagrada Familia's design, which harmoniously blends the natural beauty of its surroundings with the grandeur of its architecture.
In 2024, the Sagrada Familia welcomed 4.9 million visitors, generating almost 134 million euros in revenue. As the installation of the cross approaches, anticipation for this architectural masterpiece continues to grow. The Sagrada Familia Foundation's chairman, Esteve Camps, stated that they are unsure if Pope Leo XIV will attend the mass, but one thing is certain - the Sagrada Familia continues to captivate the world with its beauty and intrigue.
