The partnership between theme park giant Universal Studios and gaming titan Nintendo is about to level up with the opening of Super Nintendo World at Epic Universe this week. While the West Coast park already has a taste of the land, Epic Universe is serving an "expansion pack" upgrade, featuring an entire Donkey Kong Country area—including a brand new Mine Cart Madness ride! The technology might be top-notch, but it doesn't overshadow the story. As Tatham put it, "People have an emotional experience. And that's aided by technology. So we're not putting the technology out there to say, 'Hey, look, we're using technology.' We're doing it in the service of story."
Mine Cart Madness takes you through scenes straight out of Donkey Kong Country, with Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong making appearances. The focus on storytelling and immersion is evident, as you explore the nooks and crannies of Donkey Kong Country, or take part in tangible mini-games anyone can enjoy, like... bongo-ing!
The interactive entertainment doesn't stop there. Collect enough points, and you'll unlock a secret boss battle. What's a Nintendo-themed land without a secret boss battle, after all?
