ESPN Unveils New Streaming Service Amidst Expanded Rights and Partnerships

Sports media giant ESPN is set to launch its new streaming service, ESPN Unlimited, on August 21. The service, priced at $29.99 per month, will offer a comprehensive sports experience, including live games, studio shows, original content, and access to all 12 of its networks.

The service is aimed at cord cutters and digital natives who have never subscribed to pay television. ESPN's production capabilities, unparalleled within the Walt Disney Company, will ensure a steady supply of content.

Sports betting is a significant part of the fandom experience, and ESPN Unlimited is no exception. The betting experience serves as a good example of the beginning of ESPN Unlimited. The service will offer a variety of betting options, making it a one-stop-shop for sports enthusiasts.

ESPN Unlimited is set to be the best rights portfolio the company has ever had in its 46-year history. The service has secured rights to WWE events and expanded NFL rights, marking a significant expansion for ESPN.

In addition, ESPN is partnering with leagues to bring not only ESPN but also ABC, Disney, and Hulu, along with the theme parks' promotional abilities, to the table. The company is also linking with Fox One in October.

The rise of YouTube, which recently had its first exclusive NFL game, is acknowledged by ESPN. The company is open to other potential partnership and bundling opportunities, ensuring that ESPN Unlimited will continue to evolve and grow.

Jimmy Pitaro, the ESPN chief, stated that the ESPN brand continues to resonate, especially with younger people. He also admitted that ESPN cannot have everything in the sports rights universe and the newly launched ESPN Unlimited. Instead, the company will measure its success based on the totality of people consuming ESPN, not individual platforms.

The opening keynote of the FT huddle was mainly an exercise in a traditional executive pitch session, with Pitaro highlighting the strengths of ESPN Unlimited. However, he did not address the sudden exit of Molly Qerim from First Take or his potential succession of Disney CEO Bob Iger.

What is seen today is only a small portion of what's coming for ESPN Unlimited and its app. The company has made progress towards its direct-to-consumer launch with a robust rights portfolio, ensuring that sports fans will have a wealth of content to choose from. The future of ESPN Unlimited looks bright, with more developments expected in the coming years.
