In June 2025, Australia witnessed a significant surge in electric vehicle (EV) sales, with a record-breaking 13,169 battery electric vehicles (BEVs) sold, accounting for a market share of 10.3%. This represents a notable increase from the 9.2% market share in May and 8.3% in June 2024.

The first half of 2025 saw a total of 47,230 EVs sold, making up 7.6% of all new car sales in Australia. The Tesla Model Y remained the top-selling EV, with 10,431 units sold from January to June. The BYD Sealion 7 took the second spot with 3,756 sales, followed by the Tesla Model 3 with 3,715 units.

Chinese manufacturers BYD and Geely have made a significant impact on the Australian EV market, with four of the top 7 BEVs in June being from BYD. The BYD Sealion 7 had its best month yet in June, selling 1,795 units, while the low-cost BYD Dolphin offered one variant at $29,990 before on-roads, selling 561 units. The BYD Atto 3 sold 576 units, and the Geely EX5 performed well, coming in fourth with 822 sales.

Tesla saw a strong rebound with the Model Y, posting its best sales month in June 2025 since March last year. The Tesla Model 3 also regained a spot on the podium with 1,132 sales in June. Other notable models with significant sales in June include the Kia EV5 and Kia EV3, MG MG4, MG MGS5, and Polestar 4.

Plug-in hybrid vehicles also performed well, with 6,200 sold in June, nearly half being BYD models. This contributed to a total plug-in share of 15.2% for the month. The growing interest in EVs, increased competition, and price decreases across multiple models are contributing factors to the surge in EV sales.

The new National Vehicle Energy Standard (NVES) is expected to drive more cleaner models, offering more choice for drivers in 2025. This monthly and model-specific sales data provides a clear view of Australia's evolving EV market through the first half of 2025.

Riz Akhtar, founder of carloop, a company specializing in Australian EV data, insight reports, and trends, noted the rising popularity of Chinese brands in the Australian EV market. "The strong sales from Tesla, BYD, and Geely have boosted the overall EV market share, reflecting growing consumer interest in these brands," Akhtar said.

As the EV market continues to grow, it is expected that more manufacturers will enter the market, providing more options for consumers and driving the adoption of electric vehicles in Australia.

Electric vehicle sales in Australia witnessed a substantial increase in the first half of 2025, with Chinese manufacturers BYD and Geely significantly impacting the market. Notably, the Tesla Model Y had its best sales month since March last year, contributing to the overall surge in EV market share, with growing consumer interest in these brands becoming increasingly evident.
