In the world of collegiate softball and minor league baseball, stadium presentations are increasingly becoming a key factor in enhancing fan experiences. The University of Oklahoma's Love's Field and Reading Fightin Phils' FirstEnergy Stadium have recently undergone significant upgrades, thanks to the expertise of Daktronics, a leading provider in sports video technology.

At Love's Field, the University of Oklahoma's softball stadium, the new video scoreboard stands tall, measuring approximately 27 feet in height and 55 feet in width, offering full 16:9 video display. This main portion of the scoreboard is complemented by two 2.5x8.5-foot, 6mm backstop displays positioned behind home plate, showcasing animations, graphics, and messages from OU sponsors. The bottom section of the scoreboard outlines the Red River and displays balls, strikes, and sponsorships.

The Oklahoma-shaped video scoreboard, a unique feature of Love's Field, was considered appropriate given the new stadium build. This stadium, which opened its doors in March 2024, has hosted events such as youth camps and practices throughout the year.

Across the country, the Reading Fightin Phils have also made strides in enhancing their stadium's video technology. The main goal was to have a great-looking videoboard and ribbon board at FirstEnergy Stadium, which is now equipped with a 15 HD LED ribbon board that complements the main display with additional graphics, statistics, and sponsor messages.

The new video display at FirstEnergy Stadium is positioned in a spot facing directly towards home plate, making it easily visible for spectators. The previous videoboard and ancillary equipment had become increasingly challenging to maintain and replace.

The best practices for designing video and graphics presentations in these stadiums focus on leveraging high-definition, large-format video boards tailored for clear visibility, accessibility, and enhancing fan experience. Key elements include high-definition video displays, size and sightline optimization, accessibility and compliance, integrated multimedia and graphics design, and technology integration and future-proofing.

These principles, demonstrated by the University of Oklahoma and Reading Fightin Phils installations by Daktronics, ensure that spectators across the venue, from close seats to upper decks, have unobstructed views, maintaining engagement without straining. Additionally, the designs are ADA-compliant and incorporate scalable architectures to allow future upgrades and compatibility with evolving technologies.

The Fightin Phils production team started learning the Daktronics Show Control system around Thanksgiving 2023, while the University of Oklahoma worked with Daktronics to upgrade the on-site displays at Love's Field. Two fixed-digit scoreboards show both scores and important stats in the stadium, and two 10mm canopy displays deliver game-related information and sponsorship messaging at Love's Field.

In conclusion, the University of Oklahoma and Reading Fightin Phils have set a new standard for fan engagement in collegiate softball and minor league baseball stadiums. By prioritizing large, high-res displays with excellent sightlines, ADA-compliant accessibility, versatile content capabilities, and technology infrastructure, these institutions are ensuring an enhanced fan experience that goes beyond just live action viewing.
