Expanded Model Y L from Tesla China debuts, featuring a six-seat configuration.
Tesla has announced the launch of a new variant of its popular electric SUV, the Model Y, in China. Named the Model Y L, this extended wheelbase version offers several key differences from the standard Model Y, including a six-seat configuration and a longer wheelbase.
The Model Y L boasts a wheelbase of 3,040 mm, which is 150 mm (6 inches) longer than the standard Model Y's 2,890 mm wheelbase. This extended wheelbase provides more interior space, making the Model Y L a more family-friendly option. The vehicle's width remains the same at 1,920 mm.
Under the hood, the Model Y L features a Dual-Motor All-Wheel Drive (AWD) powertrain. The front and rear motors produce peak power outputs of 142 kW and 198 kW respectively, totalling about 340 kW peak power. While this is slightly lower than the standard Model Y Long Range's peak power of around 331 kW, the Model Y L's increased weight of approximately 2,088 kg (4,603 lbs) may contribute to slightly reduced performance.
The Model Y L sports new wheel designs and a rear spoiler, previously exclusive to the Model Y Performance. It is also expected to offer new paint colours. In terms of battery, the Model Y L will draw energy from ternary lithium-ion battery packs supplied by LG Energy Solution, a longtime Tesla battery partner in China.
Regarding range, the standard Model Y Long Range has an official WLTP range of about 568 km (353 miles) and an EPA range around 303–320 miles. Specific confirmed range figures for the Model Y L are not reported, but they may be slightly lower due to the longer wheelbase and increased weight.
The Model Y L is expected to debut in fall 2025, but it is not available for purchase yet. The vehicle's price in China is estimated to start around RMB 400,000 (~US$55,700), making it more expensive than the standard RWD Model Y (~US$36,700) and the Long Range AWD Model Y (~US$43,600).
While Tesla has not officially confirmed plans, it is expected that after the China launch, the Model Y L could be brought to North America and possibly other markets. The Model Y L represents an exciting addition to Tesla's lineup, offering a more spacious and family-friendly electric SUV option.
