Exploring Global Collaboration: Artificial Intelligence and Open-Source Technologies

Open-Source AI Discussion at AI Action Summit Aims to Foster Equity and Address Disinformation

The AI Action Summit, hosted by PSIA, is set to take place with a focus on the transformative potential of open-source AI. The summit will feature a roundtable discussion, moderated by Dean Arancha González, titled "Open Source as the Third Way."

This discussion will explore how open-source AI offers a pathway between expensive proprietary AI systems and inadequate public solutions. The panel, featuring Maria Ressa, a Nobel Laureate and journalist, and Vilas Dhar, President of the Patrick J. McGovern Foundation, will address ways technology migration through open frameworks can help nations and communities access advanced AI capabilities despite traditional barriers.

The session aims to bridge global compute disparities, contribute to a more inclusive future, and ensure transparency. It will emphasize collaboration, intellectual property respect, and governance models that balance public good with private sector involvement. The discussion will also cover the need for frameworks that allow fair sharing of AI benefits across public and private sectors, and how open models can help empower smaller developers, academic researchers, and emerging economies by lowering barriers to experimentation.

The event fits within broader discussions about digital sovereignty, cooperation among nations, and how open frameworks can support collective AI infrastructure-building without sacrificing autonomy. The AI Action Summit, in its ongoing theme, will highlight open-source AI as a transformative enabler for equitable AI access and innovation.

Alessandra Pereira Hermida, a PSIA student, will introduce the discussion. The event aims to foster equity, address disinformation, and democratize access for the global majority. The discussion will take place at the AI Action Summit, with the goal of ensuring a more inclusive and transparent future for AI systems in shaping narratives.
