Fashion's Ethical Shift: Billie Eilish Backs Gucci's Vegan Leather

The fashion industry is witnessing a shift towards more ethical practices, with a focus on animal welfare and sustainability. Positive developments include improvements in animal treatment for wool, down, silk, and furs. Meanwhile, vegan fashion is keeping up stylistically while benefiting both animals and the environment.

Billie Eilish, known for her activism, has become the face of Gucci's 'Horsebit 1955' handbag made from Demetra®, a vegan leather alternative. Gucci, which began researching alternatives in 2021, uses Demetra® in sneakers and handbags. The singer's involvement has encouraged designers to abandon real fur, highlighting animal welfare as a significant topic in the fashion world.

Designer Stella McCartney, a vegetarian and pioneer in sustainable fashion, uses MIRUM®, a recyclable leather alternative made from mushroom roots. In 2023, an unnamed designer presented two well-known handbags in a new edition made from MIRUM® on the fashion runway. These innovations join other plant-based options like cactus, pineapple, cork, or apple residues, which are resource-saving and biodegradable.

Originally, leather and fur were used for protection and as by-products of animal husbandry. However, today's mass animal farming causes avoidable suffering for fashion purposes. The shift towards vegan leather alternatives is a step towards a more compassionate and sustainable fashion industry.
