Football season commences with High Dynamic Range (HDR) filming in native format, accompanied by Next Generation Television broadcast
In the world of television, innovation is constant, and the latest advancement making waves is High Dynamic Range (HDR) broadcasting. This technology, which enhances the viewing experience by improving contrast between the brightest and darkest areas of the screen, is being embraced by major players in the industry.
One of the pioneers in HDR television is ROXi, in partnership with FastStream Interactive, which is offering an interactive music TV experience via NextGen TV. This technology promises to revolutionise the way we enjoy music on television.
The NFL's New Orleans Saints preseason game against the Denver Broncos, broadcast on Aug. 23, marked a significant milestone in the adoption of HDR. The game, produced by Tupelo Media Group, owned by Gray Media, was believed to be the first-ever native HDR over-the-air broadcast of any kind in the U.S. WVUE, the Gray-owned Fox affiliate in New Orleans, broadcast the contest in high dynamic range to local viewers, giving fans an opportunity to experience the improved HDR technology firsthand.
Sinclair Broadcast Group, which operates 178 television stations in 81 U.S. markets, is also on board with the HDR revolution. The company is enhancing the viewing experience of NextGen TV viewers with upconverted HDR transmitted from its NextGen TV stations. Sinclair is also offering T2 (Tennis Channel 2) and Pickleball TV Channel in 45 markets through broadcast-enabled streaming virtual channels available to connected NextGen TV viewers.
The sports broadcasting landscape is not the only area benefiting from HDR technology. Sinclair and Gray Media are making preparations for the 2026 World Cup, which will be broadcast in HDR. The 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina, Italy, will also be broadcast in HDR, ensuring a spectacular viewing experience for millions of viewers worldwide.
In an effort to promote the benefits of NextGen TV, Pearl TV plans to do so during the lead-up to the holiday shopping season. As more and more television stations adopt HDR technology, it's clear that this is just the beginning of a new era in television viewing.
Another exciting development in the HDR sphere is GameLoop, a streaming TV channel for smart TV gamers, which is carried by Gray Media and Sinclair in 49 NextGen TV markets. This channel promises to bring a new level of immersion to the gaming experience, further demonstrating the versatility and potential of HDR technology.
As we move forward, it's clear that HDR technology is set to transform the way we watch television, offering a more immersive, engaging, and dynamic viewing experience. Whether you're a sports fan, a music lover, or a gamer, there's never been a better time to upgrade to an HDR-compatible television.
