Former Student Sentenced for Secretly Recording F&M Students in Bathrooms
John Riley, a former Franklin & Marshall College student, has been sentenced for secretly recording students in campus bathrooms and elsewhere. The crimes, which involved nearly 60 charges, have had a significant impact on the victims.
Riley, who pleaded guilty on June 17, was sentenced to eight to 23 months in Lancaster County Prison, followed by nine years of probation. Assistant District Attorney Jennifer Ponessa had initially requested a sentence of 38 months imprisonment, while Defense Attorney Heather Reiner asked for a county sentence (maximum of two years).
The victims, mostly first-year women but including two men, were violated when Riley recorded them without their consent. One victim, who befriended Riley, found a camera hidden in a toilet paper dispenser. She felt responsible and experienced a loss of self-image and suicidal thoughts due to the discovery. Another student who found the camera warned Riley, who then left his dorm room and was never seen again by her.
Riley secretly recorded victims in various locations on campus, including bathrooms. There were thousands of videos, with more unidentified victims. Judge Dennis E. Reinaker considered these factors while sentencing Riley.
Riley's actions have had severe consequences for his victims. Despite the initial requests for a longer sentence, Judge Reinaker sentenced Riley to eight to 23 months in prison, followed by probation. The victims continue to grapple with the impact of Riley's crimes, highlighting the need for support and justice in such cases.
