Fostering collaborative groups of skilled data science professionals

Amid the progress of artificial intelligence (AI), a question dating back to the invention of the abacus resurfaces: Should we continue learning tasks that can be automated by AI? According to MIT Professor Devavrat Shah, this question's answer remains the same: Math fundamentals remain crucial for utilizing AI tools effectively.

Shah notes that as AI technologies such as large language models and generative AI continue to evolve and shape industries, understanding the underlying mathematical principles is essential. This knowledge allows individuals to select the appropriate AI tools for specific tasks and interpret the results accurately.

"As these cutting-edge tools reshape entire sectors of industry, bring new insights to research challenges, and influence policy-making decisions, we need people who can grasp the underlying concepts behind AI to truly leverage its potential," Shah explains.

The professor is affiliated with MIT's Institute for Data, Systems, and Society (IDSS), a cross-disciplinary unit that meets the global need for data skills like the MicroMasters Program in Statistics and Data Science, which Shah directs. The program offers online courses and has over a thousand credential holders worldwide.

"Through strategic partnerships with organizations like the Brescia Institute of Technology in Peru, IDSS is providing graduate-level data science education, training data scientists who are transforming decision-making in Peruvian industry, society, and policy," says Fotini Christia, the Ford International Professor of the Social Sciences at MIT and director of IDSS.
