German Bundestag Greenlights Extension of Combined Heat and Power Act

Munich — The German Bundestag has endorsed the extension of the Combined Heat and Power Act (CHP Act), a decision welcomed by Thüga, a leading group of municipal energy and water suppliers.

The CHP Act, a vital component of the country's energy system, contributes to energy efficiency, affordability, and supply security. For Thüga, the extension presents an important step toward implementing the energy and heat transition at a local level.

Thüga's gas power plants already operate on the CHP principle, with plans to transition to climate-neutral operations using green hydrogen in the future. The Group sees CHP as indispensable for securing success in the energy and heat transition, and also notes its role in stabilizing the overall power system.

This approval provides planning security for current projects, marking an initial achievement. However, Thüga looks ahead to plans beyond 2026 and the shift to green hydrogen, urging the next federal government to further develop and extend the CHP Act to 2035.

Thüga emphasizes the link between the CHP Act and the construction of efficient heat networks, advocating for the legal anchoring of federal funding for these networks in future legislation.

With sales of over 53 billion euros in 2023, Thüga ranks among the top three energy suppliers in Germany in terms of turnover. Operating with more than 100 companies, the Group serves as the largest network of municipal energy and water providers in the country. Thüga's activities strive to secure, sustain, and affordably supply energy and water within its partner municipalities.

The CHP Act, being a vital part of Germany's energy system, contributes to the advancement of both science and technology in the realm of environmental-science, as Thüga plans to transition its gas power plants to climate-neutral operations using green hydrogen. Furthermore, Thüga advocates for the legal anchoring of federal funding for the construction of efficient heat networks in future legislation, demonstrating the integration of technology with environmental-science towards a sustainable future.
