Germany deploys biometric stations for seamless digital ID distribution
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has awarded defense and information technology company Leidos a five-and-a-half year contract worth around $129.7 million to support its efforts in enhancing biometric identification capabilities. This contract specifically supports the Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Division’s Fingerprint Analysis Support Team (FAST) Biometric Services program [1].
The scope of this contract is extensive, including biometric identification modernization, fingerprint analysis support, system development, and integration. The primary focus is on the FBI’s Next Generation Identification (NGI) system, an advanced biometric identification system used by various law enforcement agencies across the nation [1].
Leidos has been collaborating with CJIS since 2018 to develop and incrementally integrate the NGI system. Notable features of the NGI system include the Repository for Individuals of Special Concern and the Rap Back service, which notifies authorized users of any new criminal activity for individuals in positions of public trust [1].
The contract will be executed using agile methodology and development operations concepts, enabling close collaboration between Leidos and CJIS's test, verification, and validation teams, resulting in efficient system development [1].
Leidos’ role extends beyond system development, as they aim to be a critical partner in advancing federal law enforcement technology infrastructure, ensuring sustained support and innovation for biometric identification services nationwide [1].
In essence, this contract confirms Leidos’ significant role in assisting the FBI in maintaining a leading position in biometric identification technology and supporting critical law enforcement services on a national scale. This contract complements other FBI contracts aimed at bolstering law enforcement technology and biometric services [1].
