Glarus Warned: Scammers Target Classifieds Sellers With Fake Twint QR Codes

Glarus residents are warned about a rising fraud threat. Scammers are targeting sellers on classifieds platforms, using fake invoices with QR codes to steal personal data and money via Microsoft accounts.

The fraudulent scheme involves a PDF, seemingly a receipt from Twint, sent via WhatsApp. The PDF contains a QR code that, when scanned, directs users to a fake website. Here, scammers prompt victims to enter their Microsoft account login details, giving them unauthorized access to the accounts. Once logged in, the scammers proceed to withdraw money from the accounts.

Investigations have found no link between these fraudulent QR codes and any officially registered organization. Instead, they lead to criminal phishing websites, designed to steal personal data. The increase in such fraud attempts against sellers on classifieds platforms in Glarus is a cause for concern.

Authorities urge caution when handling unsolicited PDFs with QR codes, especially those claiming to be from Twint. Never enter login details on unfamiliar websites. If you suspect a fraud attempt, report it immediately to local authorities.
