Global smartphone sales reached an unprecedented high of Rs 8.7 lakh crore in the April-June quarter of this year.

Global smartphone sales exceeded a staggering Rs 8.7 lakh crore during the April-June period worldwide.

In the second quarter of 2025, the global smartphone market experienced a significant boost, with worldwide revenues surpassing the $100 billion mark for the first time in a second calendar quarter. According to various reports, the market grew between 4% to 10% year-over-year, driven primarily by an increase in average selling price (ASP).

The ASP rose modestly by 0.5% to about $309, according to TechInsights, while Counterpoint Research reported a sharper 7% increase to nearly $350. This growth is attributed to the premiumization trend and the demand for higher-end devices.

Samsung and Apple dominated the market in Q2 2025. Samsung led in unit shipments, accounting for approximately 19% of the global market share. The company's success was largely due to the Galaxy S25 series and the newly added S25 Edge, which drove volumes in Samsung's premium smartphone segment.

Apple, on the other hand, captured about 43% of global smartphone revenues, thanks to strong sales of its iPhone 16 series, particularly the iPhone 16e in key regions like Japan and emerging markets such as the Middle East, Africa, and India.

The global smartphone shipments showed some divergence. TechInsights indicated a 4% increase to 300 million units shipped globally, while Canalys reported a slight decline to 288.9 million units. These figures reflect modest consumer demand constraints.

Despite some shipment softness, the market witnessed both volume and value growth. Counterpoint Research's latest report predicts a 3% rise in global smartphone shipments in Q2 2025.

The premiumisation trend is expected to continue, with revenue growth outpacing volume growth in 2025. This is due to expanded access to financing options, enhanced trade-in initiatives, and heightened promotional activities.

OEMs, including Samsung and Apple, benefited from robust demand for premium devices, especially in developed markets, thanks to the easing out of US tariffs. This trend is expected to continue, with the market poised for further growth in the coming quarters.
