Google Duo service officially discontinued

In a significant move, tech giant Google has announced the discontinuation of its video calling app, Google Duo, from September. This decision marks the end of an era for Duo users and the beginning of a new one as they are being transitioned to Google Meet.

Google has effectively merged Duo's functionality into Meet, phasing out the original Duo app. The Duo mobile app was renamed Meet on November 1, 2022, replacing the consumer-facing Duo. The original Google Meet app is also being phased out in favor of this unified app.

Key Changes for Google Duo Users

The primary change for Google Duo users is that the Duo app no longer operates independently. Users must now adopt Google Meet for their video communication needs, benefiting from an integrated, expanded meeting platform.

App Replacement

Duo users will now use Google Meet for video calling and meetings. The app interface on Android and iOS devices, as well as web platforms, will incorporate Duo's functionality.

Feature Continuity and Expansion

While Meet offers similar calling features as Duo, it also supports more robust meeting capabilities, aligning with Google's broader communication strategy. Users may have access to meeting creation, scheduling, and collaboration features which were not part of Duo.

Platform Coverage

Google Meet supports Android, iOS, and web, replacing Duo's prior platform reach. Support for TV platforms like Samsung Smart TV that Duo had is no longer available since its discontinuation in March 2024.

User Transition

Users of Duo must switch to Google Meet to continue using Google's video calling service. This may require downloading or updating the Google Meet app if not already installed.

Backup and Export of Call History

Users can back up their Google Duo call history by using the Google Meet app. In the "Calls" section of Google Meet, users will find their old Duo account details and options to export their call history or delete everything.

Impact on Nest Users

Nest Hub owners may experience issues with video calls as their gadgets rely on Duo's old systems. Google has not confirmed updates to make them fully compatible with Meet. It is recommended that Nest Hub owners double-check their apps, export anything they care about, and get familiar with Google Meet.

Loss of Some Duo Features

Some popular Duo features like "family mode" and "moments" will not be available in Google Meet. Some features may fall by the wayside during the consolidation process.

Simplification of User Experience

The consolidation of video calling features under Google Meet is intended to simplify the user experience. Any calls, contacts, or video moments saved in Duo will be deleted.

Stay tuned for updates regarding Google's technology, especially for Nest users. Google will consolidate all video calling features under the Google Meet banner. Google Meet offers one-to-one calls, group chats, and is available on millions of phones and laptops.

Technology advancements have integrated Duo's functionality into Google Meet, replacing the Duo app for video communication needs. Users must adopt Google Meet to continue enjoying video calling services, even though some popular Duo features like "family mode" and "moments" will not be available in Google Meet.
