Google'sEuropean Headquarters in Dublin Welcomes Impressive Public Mural
Google Ireland has received planning consent for a seven-story public mural at its Dublin headquarters, integrating interactive and virtual elements through Google's advanced technology and AI tools. The approved five-year project will see the installation of Sean Atmos's mural, dubbed "Urban Growth," at the South Bank House on Barrow Street.
Dublin City Council granted permission for the 705 square meter mural on the northern elevation of South Bank House. The planning report praised the mural as a positive addition to the Bolands Mills development and the wider area, stating that concerns raised during pre-planning had been addressed by Google Ireland.
The mural, designed by Atmos, who is renowned for creating some of Ireland's largest murals, will celebrate the character and iconic legacy of the area while simultaneously acting as a vibrant symbol of its growth. To make it more engaging, the artwork will feature an augmented reality (AR) element, allowing viewers to point their smartphones at the mural for a unique digital experience.
The AR feature includes supplementary digital layers, displaying contextual information, animations, and other elements that bring the mural to life. A plaque will be placed on the wall explaining the mural's significance, stating that it merges the industrial heritage of the Bolands Mills with the natural beauty of the Irishtown Nature Park, creating a harmonious, immersive art experience.
The mural is visible at all times given its location within the Google Campus and its proximity to Barrow Street. According to Atmos, it will play an essential role in place-making for Bolands Mills, making a positive and inspiring contribution to the innovation and community cultivated within the urban environment today.
