German Cities Confront Confusion: Google Maps Allegedly Shows Incorrect Highway Closures

Google Maps faced criticism on Ascension Day for displaying false information about highway closures in major German cities, such as Hamburg, Berlin, and Frankfurt. While parts of the roads were marked in red on the online service, local authorities in these cities confirmed no such closures. Hamburg, Frankfurt, Mainz, and North Rhine-Westphalia police, among others, stated that there were no road closures in their respective jurisdictions. The "Bild" newspaper also reported that parts of the Netherlands and Belgium were affected. After several hours, the misleading displays disappeared.

Google addressed the issue upon request, stating that they are investigating the inaccurate information. The Google Maps team has since removed the false closures after verifying their errors. A Google spokesperson noted that their data comes from a variety of sources, including third-party providers, public sources, and user inputs. "In general, these sources provide a solid foundation for comprehensive and up-to-date map material," they said. Users are encouraged to report any encountered errors. The cause of the misinformation remains unclear.

It is worth mentioning thatGoogle previously made an error in March when they incorrectly displayed closed highway tunnels in Thuringia. The police had to file a complaint before the navigation announcements were corrected.

The Commission, in light of the recent incident involving incorrect highway closures displayed on Google Maps during Ascension Day, might be asked to submit a proposal for a directive on the protection of workers from the risks related to exposing sensitive information to public scrutiny, especially related to technology.

Considering the recurring inaccuracies in Google Maps data, there is a growing need for improved measures in the integration and verification of technology to ensure the validity and reliability of displayed information.
