On July 29, 2025, electric two-wheeler manufacturer Ather Energy signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry, under the Build in Bharat initiative. This partnership is aimed at advancing India’s clean mobility and advanced manufacturing sectors.

The collaboration is a strategic effort to support and scale the electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem and related manufacturing in India. The partnership outlines a comprehensive partnership that includes:

  1. Strategic mentorship for deep-tech startups focused on the electric vehicle and advanced manufacturing value chains.
  2. Provision of infrastructure support for startups operating within the EV ecosystem.
  3. Development of joint innovation programs, such as the Bharat Startup Grand Challenge, to stimulate innovation and manufacturing capabilities.
  4. Implementation of talent and skill development initiatives, aimed at building a skilled workforce for the EV and manufacturing sectors.
  5. Facilitation of participation in key industry events like Startup Mahakumbh, along with exposure visits to manufacturing facilities, providing practical insight and networking opportunities for startups.

This collaboration, led by the Startup Policy Forum (SPF), an alliance of over 50 innovation-driven startups, is designed to:

  • Catalyse investment in domestic manufacturing and clean mobility infrastructure.
  • Increase India’s manufacturing capacity for electric vehicles and related technologies.
  • Drive employment generation in both EV manufacturing and advanced manufacturing sectors.
  • Support India’s transition to sustainable transportation systems by creating a more enabling environment for startups and manufacturers to innovate, produce, and scale operations domestically.

The MoU was signed in the presence of DPIIT Joint Secretary Shri Sanjiv Singh and Ather Energy’s Co-founder and CEO Tarun Mehta, reflecting a high-level commitment to the initiative’s success.

Tarun Mehta expressed his happiness about collaborating with DPIIT to strengthen support systems for hardware and deep-tech start-ups. Shweta Rajpal Kohli, President and CEO of the Startup Policy Forum, stated that the partnership between DPIIT and Ather Energy brings the Startup Policy Forum's Build in Bharat initiative to life.

The partnership is expected to create a more supportive environment for manufacturing-oriented start-ups, contributing significantly to India's transition towards sustainable transportation. The collaboration will also include co-hosted talent and skill development initiatives, participation in key start-up events, and on-ground exposure visits to foster learning and networking.
