Government discontinues marketing division
The UK government has announced significant changes in its communications structures, with the Central Office of Information (COI) set to close. This decision comes as a result of a review conducted by Matt Tee, permanent secretary for government communication.
The closure of the COI, the government's marketing and communications division, is part of a broader strategy aimed at streamlining operations, improving efficiency, and saving money by cutting bureaucracy and reducing duplication. The changes are intended to adapt to the dramatic impact of changing lifestyles and the proliferation of interactive technology on government direct communication.
Before its closure, the COI worked closely with government departments to produce public information films and campaigns on various social issues. However, the coalition's cost-cutting stance has effectively ended this role for the COI.
The Cabinet Office will now take over the responsibility for marketing and communications for all government departments. This move is designed for significant improvements in the efficiency and effectiveness of government communications.
The review also recommended the discontinuation of the COI and suggested that consideration of digital solutions should be integrated from the start of program activities. The COI was criticized for lagging industry standards in its use of digital communication channels and for failing to utilize the Directgov website effectively.
The changes in government communications structures do not involve the creation of a new Government Communications Centre, as previously proposed, but rather a restructuring and consolidation of existing resources under the Cabinet Office.
Maude, from the Cabinet Office, stated these changes today, marking a new era in government communications. The changes are expected to bring about a more efficient and cost-effective approach to government communications, in line with the current economic climate and the evolving landscape of digital communication.
