Porsche Unveils Wireless Charging Technology for New Electric Cayenne
Porsche has announced that its new, fully electric generation of the Cayenne, set to be released in 2026, will be the first of the brand's models to be equipped with wireless charging technology. This groundbreaking innovation is set to make charging an electric vehicle at home a simple and convenient process.
The heart of this system is an 11 kW wireless charging system, developed by Porsche, which allows for contactless energy transfer over a few centimeters. The receiving unit for the wireless charging system, protected from stone chips and weather influences, is located in the vehicle underbody between the front wheels.
The system consists of vehicle technology and a one-box floor pad that does not require a wallbox or control unit. The floor plate, 117 cm long, 78 cm wide, and 6 cm high, can be installed in a garage, carport, or outdoor parking spot and connected to the power grid.
To start the charging process, the Cayenne must be parked over the floor plate. The vehicle automatically lowers itself to enable wireless charging. If a living being gets between the vehicle and the floor plate or a metallic object lies on the latter and starts to heat up, the charging process will be automatically interrupted for safety.
The efficiency of energy transmission from the power grid to the battery in Porsche's wireless charging system is up to 90 percent. The total system cost for the upcoming electric Cayenne, including the necessary hardware for inductive charging, is estimated to be around 7,000 euros.
Porsche's development board member, Michael Steiner, stated that ease of use, everyday usability, and charging infrastructure are crucial factors in the acceptance of electromobility. The IAA show in Munich was the venue where a spokesperson for Porsche discussed the inductive charging system.
In addition, Porsche has developed an inductive charging pad in Germany, estimated to cost around 5,000 euros. Porsche will soon offer customers a corresponding charging system for wireless charging of electric vehicles.
With this innovation, Porsche is leading the way in the development of wireless charging technology for electric vehicles, setting a new standard for convenience and ease of use in electromobility. The new, fully electric generation of the Cayenne is set to be a game-changer in the electric vehicle market.
