Highlighting Simple Passwords in Global Cybersecurity Awareness Effort
Millions of people worldwide are using obvious and easily guessable passwords, leaving their digital information vulnerable to cyber threats. Recognising the importance of password security, Santander has launched a global awareness campaign during Password Month, emphasising the need for strong and secure passwords.
The campaign, which was implemented across Santander's social media profiles in several countries, encourages the use of lengthy, complex, and unique passwords, as well as good management practices.
According to experts, a minimum password length of 12 characters is recommended, with 15 or more preferred. Longer passwords exponentially increase security against brute-force attacks because they have more possible combinations. To make passwords even more secure, it's essential to use a mix of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters. Incorporating letter substitutions, such as replacing "o" with "0", can also increase unpredictability.
Instead of using personal details like names, birthdays, or common phrases, it's advisable to generate passwords from random characters or use random multi-word phrases (passphrases) that are easier to remember but still secure. Unusual spellings or multiple languages can make passphrases even more secure.
Another crucial practice is to never reuse passwords across different accounts. This prevents a single breach from compromising multiple services. To manage complex passwords, Santander encourages the use of a reputable password manager, which can generate, store, and auto-fill unique passwords securely.
Besides a strong password, adding Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) offers an extra layer of security, requiring a second verification step to prevent unauthorized access even if passwords are compromised. It's also recommended to regularly update passwords, especially for sensitive accounts, to maintain security over time and respond to potential leaks.
Santander continues to offer practical tips for strengthening cybersecurity, such as using multifactor authentication (MFA), activating security features like Santander Key and Santander Pass, and avoiding obvious passwords.
The campaign in Spain temporarily modified some Santander branch signs with iconic flames and nine white asterisks, symbolising the importance of hiding passwords. The campaign also included tips and recommendations to avoid falling into the deepfake trap and a call for action against the $537 billion in global "fraudemic" reported in a recent study.
