Historic Gas Balloons in Aachen Begin Demolition After 59 Years
Regionetz has initiated the demolition of three historic gas balloons in Aachen. Built in 1963, these 32-meter-high structures served as gas storage facilities until 2020. The demolition process, handled by three specialists, involves removing their asbestos-containing coating using a high-pressure water jet method.
The gas balloons, standing tall at 32 meters, were decommissioned a few years ago due to changes in gas demand management strategies. Now, Regionetz has begun their dismantling, a task assigned to three skilled workers, each responsible for one sphere.
The demolition process commences with the removal of the asbestos-laden coating. This is achieved using a high-pressure water jet technique. Once the coating is eliminated, the spheres will be dismantled piece by piece, starting from the top. Each piece, weighing between two to three tons, will be carefully removed to ensure safety and efficiency.
The demolition of the three gas balloons in Aachen is underway, marking the end of an era for these structures that served the region for nearly six decades. Regionetz CEO Axel Kahl has confirmed that there are no plans to preserve these industrial monuments, and the company is proceeding with the dismantling process.
