Household Fiber Optic Fees Sometimes Lowest Compared to DSL Rates by Verivox - Household Fibre Optic Rates Often Lower Than DSL Offerings by Verivox
German households may find fiber optic tariffs more cost-effective than traditional DSL, according to an analysis by Verivox.
Telecommunications expert Joerg Schamberg from Verivox stated that fiber optic often provides better value for money, with the "Fiber Optic 150" tariff from Deutsche Telekom priced at 22.45 euros per month, compared to the slower "Magenta Zuhause L" at 22.20 euros. Various fiber optic providers offer plans with over 100 megabits per second for under 30 euros per month, while some DSL tariffs are more expensive and offer less performance, the expert explained.
After the 25th month, the fiber optic tariff from Deutsche Telekom becomes significantly cheaper than the DSL tariff by 44.95 to 47.95 euros. After the minimum contract period, all technologies cost the same at Vodafone.
The outdated DSL technology can no longer meet the future demands for stability and speed, Verivox noted. Nationwide, fiber optic is available in 36 percent of households, but is only activated in every fourth household, according to the Federal Association of Broadband Communication. This means that 74 percent of bookable connections are idle, the comparison portal added.
The slow demand for fiber optic could be boosted by consumer-based models, regional special tariffs, or loyalty discounts.
The analysis was conducted by Verivox on April 17, 2023, with the prices mentioned being effective prices including all one-time costs and bonuses, calculated over 24 months.
In determining whether fiber optic is generally cheaper than DSL for households in Germany, it's important to consider the cost, availability, and internet speed of each option. While installation costs for fiber optic may be higher, the faster and more reliable connections it offers often provide better value for money. Verivox, as a comparison platform, helps consumers make informed decisions based on their specific needs and location.
Although the decision whether to choose fiber optic or DSL depends on various factors, this analysis suggests that fiber optic may offer a more cost-effective solution for many households in Germany.
- In light of Verivox's analysis, vocational training programs could be designed to equip individuals with skills necessary to work in the technology sector, contributing to the growth of the industry by providing a workforce capable of managing and maintaining advanced fiber optic networks.
- Furthermore, finance institutions could offer attractive loans or incentives for households to invest in fiber optic technology, particularly for those in areas with high availability, promoting wider adoption and reducing the initial cost barrier for families seeking a more reliable and cost-effective internet connection.
