Hyundai Celebrates 40 Years of Sonata with Seoul Exhibition
Hyundai is marking the 40th anniversary of its Sonata sedan with a special exhibition in Seoul. The event celebrates the model's evolution from the Stellar to the present day, showcasing its impact on the automotive industry and people's lives.
The Sonata's journey began in 1985 as an upscale version of the Stellar, introduced two years earlier and styled by Italian designer Giorgetto Giugiaro. The first Sonata featured a 2.0-litre engine and advanced features like power seats and cruise control.
Over the decades, each generation of Sonata has pushed boundaries. The second-gen entered the U.S. market, the third introduced multi-link rear suspension, and the seventh became Korea's first plug-in hybrid. The latest Sonata, facelifted in 2023, boasts a Seamless Horizon Lamp lightbar and curved panoramic infotainment display.
The Stellar, the Sonata's predecessor, also made waves with its advanced features for the time, including power windows and a tachometer. Despite its influence, the original Stellar's designer remains uncredited in available search results.
The Sonata exhibition at 'piknic', a cafe-gallery near Namsan mountain, runs from September 25, 2025, to January 4, 2026. It features a restored 1988 Stellar, the current Sonata, sketches, photos, and personal essays. Hyundai has sold over 10 million Sonatas worldwide since its debut, testament to its enduring appeal and innovation.
