"In London, renowned expert Dr. Tetris tackles the largest rendition of the classic puzzle game"
In an extraordinary collaboration, Dr. Henk Rogers, the co-founder of The Tetris Company, has partnered with Outernet to create a world-first: an escape room based on the iconic game Tetris. This immersive, 360-degree experience spans over 23,000 sq ft, featuring 16k LED screens and is located in the heart of London.
The Tetris escape room is more than just a game; it's a spectacle. Seven visitors at a time can scan their phones to compete against each other, controlling a giant array of sliding blocks in this interactive installation. The game, visible from several hundred meters up Tottenham Court Road, is already attracting a crowd.
Dr. Rogers, often referred to as the 'multi-millionaire silver fox,' is no stranger to groundbreaking ventures. He wrote the first role-playing game in Japan, The Black Onyx, a market-leading hit in 1984. His story was immortalized in the 2023 film Tetris.
Tetris, a game that transcends culture and gender, has been a global phenomenon since its inception. Over 520 million units have been sold across multiple platforms over 40 years. It even defied politics, emerging from behind the Iron Curtain as a soft-power behemoth.
Dr. Rogers is not just celebrating the past with this escape room. He's also looking to the future, working on creating a Tetris version that is more watchable as a spectator sport. He sees the escape room as an ongoing proof-of-concept for the core values of Tetris.
The Tetris escape room is set to run until October 2025 and was specifically developed for Outernet. Dr. Rogers expressed a desire to see this unique experience rolled out internationally.
While Tetris is a significant part of his past, Dr. Rogers is now focused on fighting climate change through his Blue Planet Energy foundation. He's not just making history with his games; he's making a difference in the world.
The collaboration with Dr. Rogers, which was first implemented in London, was initiated by the British Council. Alexey Pajitnov, the creator of Tetris, remains an essential part of the game's history. Despite no longer running the business, Dr. Rogers continues to be involved, ensuring that the legacy of Tetris remains intact. He is, after all, Dr. Tetris.
In addition to his work in gaming and climate change, Dr. Rogers is also writing a memoir titled The Perfect Game - Tetris: From Russia With Love. It promises to be an insightful journey into the world of one of the most beloved games in history.
