In the competitive AI smartphone arena, can Apple manage to outdo Samsung and Google?
Apple is gearing up for its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), scheduled to take place from June 10-14, 2024. The tech giant has been making significant strides in the realm of artificial intelligence (AI), and it's expected to showcase its latest AI advancements during the event.
In a recent announcement, Greg Joswiak, Apple's senior vice president of marketing, described the upcoming AI developments as 'Absolutely Incredible.' One of the key features Apple will introduce is 'Apple Intelligence,' an integrated AI technology set to be a part of iOS 18, iPhone 16, and the new macOS versions.
'Applied Intelligence' is expected to bring a host of new features, including Live Translation, enhanced Siri with ChatGPT integration, writing tools, and intelligent actions. This technology is part of the OS 26 generation and is intended for global use, outside of China.
Meanwhile, Apple has also developed its own large language model (LLM), known as Ajax. The company's devices, including the newer iPhone releases, already incorporate AI to some extent, with the cameras featuring AI for photo enhancements such as subject isolation and background blurring.
However, Apple appears to be lagging behind Samsung and Google in terms of the diversity and quantity of smartphone AI features. Samsung's Galaxy S24 flagship series, for instance, comes with various AI features under the Galaxy AI umbrella, including 'Circle to Search' for instant Google search results, 'Live Translate' and 'Interpreter' for real-time language translation, 'Transcript Assist' for transcribing and summarizing recordings, a built-in Grammarly with 'Chat Assist' for tonation correction, and 'Photo Assist' for retouching and generative fills.
Google's Pixel 8, due for release around the same time, is loaded with features powered by Gemini Nano, a version of Google's Gemini AI model. Microsoft, too, has entered the AI race with Copilot, offering generative AI features across various applications, including Microsoft's GitHub, which runs its own Copilot, providing auto-complete suggestions for code.
Spotify has also hopped on the AI bandwagon, with its AI-powered playlisting through its AI DJ feature. JP Morgan estimates that generative artificial intelligence could increase global GDP by up to 10%.
In a surprising turn of events, Apple is reportedly in talks with Baidu to incorporate Baidu's AI technology, Ernie, into its upcoming iPhone 16, iOS 18, and MacOS version. This move could potentially close the gap between Apple and its competitors in the AI domain.
As the tech world eagerly awaits Apple's AI unveilings at the WWDC, it's clear that the race to integrate AI into everyday devices and services is heating up. Stay tuned for more updates from the tech frontier!
