Insider view of DTM commentary: Mielke and Schumacher's exchanges in the commentator booth
In the world of motorsport, the German Touring Car Masters (DTM) is a thrilling spectacle that captivates hundreds of thousands of fans each race weekend. This time, the action is set to be even more exciting as Edgar Mielke and David Schumacher take the commentary box at the DTM season finale in Hockenheim.
Mielke, a seasoned broadcaster and the voice of DTM on Sat.1 and ProSieben since 2018, brings a unique energy to the table. Known for his lively gestures and dynamic voice, Mielke seeks to create a personal connection with his co-commentator or viewers, making it feel like a conversation rather than speaking to tens of thousands of viewers.
Joining Mielke in the commentary box is Schumacher, a racing driver currently participating in the NLS and the GT World Challenge. Schumacher is new to the moderator's chair in the DTM broadcast but brings a wealth of racing knowledge to the table. He is one of four TV experts, who alternate with DTM Vice-Champion Kelvin van der Linde, former champions Maximilian Götz, and Mike Rockenfeller.
The commentary box, an eight-square-meter room sealed off with thick fabric curtains, is a bustling hub of activity. Mielke and Schumacher are surrounded by screens displaying lap times, stewards' decisions, and the ProSieben live broadcast. The lights on the desk are red when they are live, adding to the excitement of the broadcast.
During the broadcast, Mielke and Schumacher give each other visual cues about relevant information like sector best times. They also constantly check their phones for any news or notes from the production manager.
The duo has previously worked together at the Lausitzring in 2024 and in Zandvoort in 2025, and their chemistry is evident. Mielke's broadcasting style, often described as loudmouth, overly emotional, and too dramatic, is a balance between entertainment and expertise.
Interestingly, Mielke's friend, Bastian, made an unexpected TV debut during the second training day at the Red Bull Ring. He was present in the commentary box and accidentally commented on a short clip of the training alongside Mielke.
On September 12, 2025, at the Red Bull Ring, Mielke and Schumacher are preparing for a live broadcast during the second practice session. The broadcasting group ProSiebenSat.1 has been the TV partner of the German motorsport series, DTM, since 2018.
As the DTM season finale approaches, fans can look forward to an exciting broadcast, with Mielke and Schumacher at the helm, bringing their passion for racing and knack for entertainment to the commentary box.
