Intel Intends to Expand into Portable Gaming PC Market to Compete with AMD
Intel's Panther Lake Handheld Gaming PC Set for Late 2025 Release
The handheld PC market is seeing a surge of interest from major gaming hardware manufacturers, with Intel leading the charge. While Alienware remains on the sidelines, Intel is making waves with its upcoming Panther Lake handheld gaming PC, set to be released in the second half of 2025, with volume supply starting possibly in 2026.
The Panther Lake is noteworthy for being the first Intel mobile CPU built on the advanced 18A manufacturing process, promising superior efficiency and competitiveness against rivals like TSMC. One of the key highlights is the upgraded integrated GPU, featuring 12 Xe3 graphics cores. This represents a 50% increase in cores compared to the previous Lunar Lake generation with 8 Xe2 cores. The Xe3 cores also incorporate architectural improvements over Xe2, promising even better per-core graphics performance.
This higher count and improved architecture could translate to significantly enhanced gaming performance in a handheld form factor, potentially surpassing current generation handheld gaming devices. The integrated Arc 140T graphics tile in the Arrow Lake H SoC suggests promising performance for gaming handhelds, although battery life might not be as good as Lunar Lake handhelds. Intel is providing dev kits to game developers for handhelds, and is keeping handheld specialists on staff as additional support for engineers and software developers.
