British automaker MG is set to launch 13 new electrified models globally by 2027, backed by an investment of approximately 100 billion yuan (around 14 billion USD). The latest addition to this lineup is the newly unveiled MG4 electric hatchback, which is already making waves in the Chinese market and contributing significantly to MG's success in Europe.

The revised MG4, set to begin pre-orders on August 5 with deliveries scheduled for September 5, offers a more spacious and lighter design. Measuring approximately 4,395 mm in length, 1,842 mm in width, and 1,551 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,750 mm, the updated MG4 provides increased passenger and cargo space compared to its predecessor.

Under the hood, the base model uses a rear-mounted 120 kW (about 161 hp) permanent magnet motor, with a top speed of 160 km/h. A dual-motor SP or XPower variant offers over 400 hp, capable of 0-100 km/h acceleration in under 4 seconds, putting it in sports car territory. Five trims offer various power and battery configurations, catering to different user needs.

Battery options are expected to be around 49 kWh, 64 kWh, and 77 kWh, with corresponding ranges approximately 218 miles (351 km), 288 miles (463 km), and 329 miles (529 km) respectively in real-world estimates. The vehicle features a lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery pack supplied by Rept Battery Energy.

Chinese media and MG brand director Chen Cui have hinted that the new MG4 may adopt a semi-solid-state battery, which could potentially offer a range of up to 800 km under the CLTC testing cycle. However, official confirmation from SAIC (MG’s parent company) has not yet been made public, and battery capacity and exact range figures remain undisclosed.

The MG4 is currently focused on the Chinese market, with a planned launch in September 2025. The name "Donglai Purple" (东来紫), meaning "coming from the East," adorns the new exterior colour of the vehicle. The MG4 remains at the centre of MG's plan to launch 13 new electrified models, signalling the brand's commitment to sustainable mobility solutions.

In Q1 2025, MG Motor Europe registered a 33.5% year-over-year increase, with the MG4 contributing significantly. In the UK, MG reported 24,641 registrations in Q1, and over 40,000 MG4 units sold since launch. The MG4 electric hatchback continues to perform well abroad, marking a promising future for the British automaker.

The new MG4 introduces an innovative cockpit system co-developed with Oppo, offering smartphone mirroring, voice-activated functions, and gesture-based navigation. The interface is compatible with devices from Oppo, Huawei, and Apple, ensuring a seamless user experience for a wide range of customers.

As MG embarks on its ambitious electrified expansion, the new MG4 electric hatchback serves as a testament to the brand's commitment to innovation, performance, and sustainability. With its larger design, multiple powertrain and battery options, and the tantalizing prospect of semi-solid-state battery technology, the MG4 is poised to capture the hearts of electric vehicle enthusiasts worldwide.
