In a significant move, Apple Inc. has announced the release of iPadOS 16, a free software update available today for supported devices. This latest operating system brings a host of new features designed to enhance productivity, collaboration, and user experience.

One of the most anticipated additions is the arrival of the Weather app on iPad, offering immersive animations, detailed maps, and tappable forecast modules. The Weather app is set to revolutionize how iPad users stay updated with the latest weather information.

Another notable feature is the introduction of Reference Mode on the 12.9-inch iPad Pro with Liquid Retina XDR display. This mode enables the device to match color requirements in workflows like review and approve, color grading, and compositing, making it an invaluable tool for professionals in various creative fields.

Collaboration has been given a boost with the integration of collaboration features in Messages. Now, everyone on a thread is automatically added to the document, spreadsheet, or project, streamlining teamwork and making collaboration more efficient.

iCloud Shared Photo Library is another collaboration-focused feature that allows up to six people to collaborate on a separate library, contribute to, and enjoy shared photos and videos.

The new operating system also brings improvements to multitasking. Virtual Memory Swap expands the available memory for all apps, making multitasking seamless on iPadOS 16. Additionally, Display Zoom allows users to increase the pixel density on iPadOS 16, benefiting multitasking with Stage Manager and Split View.

In terms of communication, Messages in iPadOS 16 offers new functionalities such as the ability to edit, undo send, and mark conversations as unread. Users can also invite friends to share activities like movies, TV shows, workouts, or games in Messages with SharePlay.

Safari in iPadOS 16 includes new security and collaboration features with passkeys, a next-generation credential that replaces passwords. Passkeys are designed to work across apps and the web, and users can sign in to websites or apps on non-Apple devices using their iPad.

Productivity is further boosted with the introduction of Freeform, a new productivity app that offers real-time collaboration with full support for Apple Pencil.

Mail introduces new smart tools such as Remind me, automatic follow-up suggestions, cancellation of delivery before reaching the recipient's inbox, and scheduling emails.

Finally, Siri gets an upgrade with the ability to run shortcuts as soon as an app is downloaded without requiring upfront setup. Passkeys use Touch ID or Face ID for biometric verification and are synced with end-to-end encryption using iCloud Keychain.

Visual Look Up expands to recognise birds, insects, and statues in photos, helping users quickly get information about objects and scenes. Live Text can now recognise text in videos across the system, making text completely interactive in paused video frames.

The Home app gets an all-new design that makes it easier to navigate, organise, view, and control smart home accessories.

With these new features, iPadOS 16 is set to redefine the iPad user experience, offering a more productive, collaborative, and enjoyable experience for users.
