IT disturbances persist, according to Jaguar Land Rover's statement

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has extended its production shutdown until September 24, 2025, following a cyber attack that occurred in late August. The attack has disrupted production at locations such as Solihull and Wolverhampton.

The exact perpetrators of the cyberattack remain unknown, with JLR stating that they have not identified any specific group or actor. However, a hacker group called “Scattered Lapsus$ Hunters” has claimed responsibility for the attack, posting cryptic messages on Telegram. It is unclear if the group is indeed responsible, and investigations are ongoing.

The attack has underscored the importance of cybersecurity for business resilience, according to James McQuiggan, the CISO advisor at KnowBe4. He emphasizes that a culture of cyber resilience, combining strong technical controls with user training, can help reduce exposure and aid recovery.

McQuiggan warns against ignoring human risk in cybersecurity strategies. He highlights social engineering as the leading entry point for attackers, stressing the need for ongoing security awareness, phishing simulations, and behavior analysis in a human risk management program.

In addition, McQuiggan advises organizations to adopt zero trust principles to limit attacker movement within systems. This means that no user or device within a system is fully trusted for authorized access until it has been verified and authenticated.

Moreover, supply chain risk assessments should be strengthened to mitigate potential vulnerabilities. This is crucial as cyber attacks can extend beyond the immediate organization, affecting suppliers and customers.

McQuiggan also emphasizes the importance of business continuity and cyber defense being indivisible. He advises organizations to regularly test and update their business continuity and incident response plans to ensure they are effective in the face of a cyber attack.

Data theft during cyber incidents can lead to long-term risks such as reputational damage and regulatory consequences. Therefore, it is essential for organizations to prioritize cybersecurity to maintain their business resilience and protect their valuable assets.

It is a reminder for all organizations to stay vigilant and proactive in their cybersecurity measures, as cyber attacks can have significant impacts on business operations and reputation.
