Italian authorities punish manipulated artificial intelligence content

Italy has taken a significant step forward in regulating the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) within its borders, as the Senate has approved a framework law on AI. The vote count was 77 in favor and 55 against, resulting in a clear majority in parliament.

The new Italian AI law aims to regulate the use of AI systems and includes provisions for the circulation of AI-generated content. However, it does not repeat the penalties for distributing AI-generated content without the consent of the people shown, as previously mentioned. Instead, it establishes penalties for the unauthorized distribution of such news.

In recent months, there have been numerous cases of AI-generated content, particularly involving pornographic videos. Women, and often celebrities, have been the primary victims in these cases. The new Italian law seeks to address this issue and protect individuals from such invasive and harmful content.

The maximum punishment for distributing AI-generated photos and videos without consent in Italy is five years in prison. The law also applies to both businesspeople and individuals in Italy.

In addition to regulating AI-generated content, the new Italian law includes provisions for the punishment of the distribution of fake AI-generated footage. This is a crucial step in combating the spread of disinformation and maintaining the integrity of media and public discourse.

The Italian government is also tasked with developing regulations for the use of AI systems, ensuring that the country stays at the forefront of AI technology while maintaining ethical and legal standards.

Interestingly, the legislative initiative on handling false information through artificial intelligence was introduced in Germany by Health Minister Nina Warken. However, specific names of other government members or parliamentarians who adopted the proposal are not listed in the available sources.

Italy is the first country within the EU to have a national legal framework that incorporates new European AI guidelines. This move is expected to set a precedent for other EU countries and contribute to a more unified approach to AI regulation across the continent.
