Kristina's Chatroom: The Episode Featuring the Protractor-shaped Keyboard
In the world of DIY keyboards, creative designs and unique builds take center stage. This week, we delve into a range of custom keyboards that are sure to catch your eye, including the Protractor Adjustable Keyboard, the AR-60% Keyboard with a Mil-spec Stock, the Quiet Type Battlestation, and the Malling-Hansen Takygraf.
Protractor Adjustable Keyboard
The Protractor Keyboard, a creation by [BFB_Workshop], features a unique design where the entire board moves, making it an intriguing addition to any keyboard collection. This keyboard has been constructed using a nice!nano v2 board, but any ZMK-supported board with similar dimensions can be used instead. The Protractor sports 60 Gateron KS-33 switches, custom keycaps, and clearly visible ribbon cable wiring for an aesthetically pleasing touch.
While the palm rest functionality might not seem comfortable for some, the Protractor keyboard remains a fascinating piece to type on. If you're interested in building one yourself, the files and instructions can be found on Printables.
AR-60% Keyboard with Mil-spec Stock
This outstanding creation by [Sli22ard], adorned with a MOE fixed carbine stock, manages to fit on a keyboard display despite its size. A striking feature is the presence of a Dreamcast in storage, which can be admired in the second photo.
The case is a Keysme Pic60, custom Cerakoted, with a 4pplet waffling60 PCB within its walls. With a design that accommodates attachments on the upper left corner, connecting the stock was evidently a straightforward process. Gateron Type R switches and a NovelKeys Cream Arc switch for the Spacebar, paired with GMK Striker keycaps, make up the majority of the setup.
The Midnight-y keycaps, coupled with a monster gold Spacebar, exude an excellent appearance, and [Sli22ard] claims it produces a thocking sound that demands attention.
Quiet Type Battlestation
Do you boast a top-tier setup on a formidable desk pad? If so, consider sharing a photo with us, along with your handle and a detailed description, and you might earn a feature in this section.
Historical Clackers: Malling-Hansen Takygraf
The Malling-Hansen Takygraf, an often overlooked creation from M-H, was a remarkable writing machine with a speed rivaling human speech. Only one was ever produced, and its location remains unknown. The intention behind the Takygraf was to create a typewriter that could match the swiftness of natural speech for stenography purposes.
This mechanical marvel, unlike the more well-known Malling-Hansen Writing Ball, produced impressions in the paper band through the contact of metal points and form impressions. It was possible to type as quickly as one speaks, thanks to its ingenious design.

Finally, a Keyboard for Metalheads
The Cleaver, another aluminium keyboard from the same company that brought us the Icebreaker, boasts a slimmer and more streamlined design compared to its predecessor. Both keyboards are machined from a single block of aluminium, with tiny, laser-cut holes for legends that are more legible than those on the Icebreaker.
The Cleaver differs from the Icebreaker in that it is a Hall-effect keyboard, which could provide a unique typing experience. The pre-order price for the Cleaver is set at $850 for both black and unpainted variants, making it a more accessible option for those intrigued by its design.
