London's iconic black taxis will now offer complimentary internet access
London's Black Cabs to Offer Free WiFi Starting Next Year
A Tech City start-up called EyeTease is set to revolutionise the travel experience in London's iconic black cabs. From next year, passengers will have access to CabWiFi, a service that provides 15 minutes of free WiFi access in exchange for watching a 15-second advertisement.
The service aims to address the connectivity issues faced by passengers on the move and in between buildings. CabWiFi works by converting 3G and 4G mobile signals into a WiFi network, making it suitable for using laptops, tablets, book readers, and phones.
EyeTease is currently in negotiations with several advertisers who might support the CabWiFi scheme. Major brands and companies interested in digital and in-cab advertising are among the potential partners, although specific names have not been disclosed.
The digital advertising screens on taxis, according to EyeTease, are part of their plan to champion a new format in London. However, these screens are not mentioned as a requirement for accessing the free 15 minutes of WiFi.
Richard Corbett, CEO of EyeTease, stated that with an average dwell time of 15 minutes in a taxi, passengers can now use their devices for internet access without worrying about high data roaming charges.
EyeTease has invested over a quarter of a million into the development of the digital advertising screens for taxis over the past 3 years. The company is aiming to trial the digital advertising screens on taxis in early 2013, pending Transport for London approval.
The CabWiFi service is a significant step towards providing a solution for internet connectivity issues in London's black cabs. With the service set to launch next year, passengers can look forward to staying connected during their taxi journeys without incurring additional data charges.
