LoveFrom & OpenAI Team Up for 2023 AI Device: A 'Computer Friend'
LoveFrom, the design firm founded by former Apple designer Jony Ive, and OpenAI are joining forces to develop a new AI device. The project, likened to the film 'Her', aims to create a 'kind of computer friend' that is helpful yet non-intrusive. The device, set for a 2023 launch, faces challenges in scalability, privacy, and designing the assistant's personality.
The AI hardware, a 'family of devices', ranges from a displayless smart speaker to a portable pin. It's designed to be continuously on, collecting environmental data to build a 'memory' for the virtual assistant. OpenAI is working with Chinese contract manufacturers like Luxshare for production. However, scalability is a hurdle, as OpenAI's current infrastructure may not support a mass-market, always-active AI device.
More than 20 former Apple employees, skilled in product design, audio, camera, and manufacturing, have been recruited for the project. LoveFrom, led by Ive, is responsible for the device's development. Despite the talent involved, challenges remain. Privacy handling, especially with continuous data collection by cameras and microphones, is unresolved. Designing the assistant's personality is another significant challenge.
The new AI device, a collaboration between OpenAI and LoveFrom, is planned for a 2023 launch. While it promises a helpful, non-intrusive virtual assistant, unresolved issues in scalability, privacy, and personality design could delay its market debut.
