Luxury automaker, Mercedes-AMG, ponders the launch of an electric, two-door sports car model.

Mercedes-AMG, the high-performance division of Mercedes-Benz, is currently enjoying success with their two-seater sports car using a combustion engine. However, the company is not resting on its laurels and is looking to the future, with a particular focus on technology, performance, and economics.

The German automaker has not set a specific timeline for the market launch of the potential two-seater electric sports car, but it is expected to hit the market around 2026, according to reports. This electric sports car will be part of the high-performance architecture AMG.EA, which is planned for series use starting that year. The architecture features advanced battery and cooling technology.

Before diving headfirst into the electric sports car market, Mercedes-AMG is planning to focus on the two-seater combustion engine platform. In the meantime, the AMG GT 63 S E Performance plug-in hybrid will be introduced in 2024, marketed as a vehicle for driving enthusiasts.

Despite their current success with combustion engine sports cars, Mercedes-AMG is not ruling out the possibility of an electric two-seater sports car. In fact, the company is reportedly developing a full-electric four-seater sports sedan named AMG GT XX. If a new electric coupe gets the green light, it would continue to be sold alongside the combustion engine sports car.

AMG is known for its flexibility and constant review and address of its portfolio. The company's CEO, Schiebe, stated that sometimes a car is built that is not the most profitable, but it is important for the brand and shapes the brand. This suggests that even if the electric sports car is not expected to be a lucrative venture initially, Mercedes-AMG is willing to invest in it for the sake of the brand.

The potential for accelerating the electric two-seater sports car program is there if there is a significant increase in interest in battery-only sports cars. Mercedes-AMG will continue to invest in combustion engine sports cars well into the next decade, but it seems that the future of the brand lies in a balanced approach to both technologies.

It's worth noting that Mercedes-AMG has previously attempted to create a two-seater electric sports car, with the battery version of the AMG SLS. However, it was only produced in small quantities and did not have a successor. This new electric sports car could be a chance for Mercedes-AMG to rectify that and create a truly successful electric sports car that delivers on both driving enjoyment and technological innovation.
