Lyon Airport Becomes France's First Net Zero Emissions Airport

Lyon Airport, operated by VINCI Airports, has made history as the first French airport with over ten million passengers to achieve net zero emissions. This significant milestone was reached in May 2025, certified by ACI Europe with the ACA5 certificate.

The airport's journey towards sustainability began in 2016 under VINCI Airports' management. Since then, Lyon Airport has implemented an ambitious environmental action plan. Key achievements include reducing direct CO2 emissions by 94% between 2013 and 2024, covering scopes one and two.

Heating at the airport is now powered entirely by biogas, certified with guarantees of origin. Additionally, the vehicle fleet has been optimized and partly electrified. Solar power is also produced on-site for self-consumption. Residual emissions are offset through local reforestation projects, ensuring the airport keeps emissions below 500 tonnes of CO2 equivalent per year.

Toulon Airport, another VINCI Airports operation, reached net zero emissions in 2023, demonstrating the company's commitment to sustainability across its portfolio.

Lyon Airport's net zero achievement is a testament to VINCI Airports' dedication to reducing its carbon footprint. With all electricity used at Lyon Airport now green, and heating powered by biogas, the airport stands as a pioneer in sustainable aviation. Its success serves as an inspiration for other airports seeking to minimize their environmental impact.
