AI in German Medicine: A Significant Opportunity for Precision Diagnostics and Personalized Care

Majority of medical professionals in Germany view AI as a promising advancement for the field of medicine.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is gaining traction in the German medical sector, according to a study conducted by the digital association Bitkom. A majority of German doctors surveyed (78%) view AI as a significant opportunity for medicine, with 60% expecting improved diagnoses in certain cases. However, 76% called for strict regulation to ensure AI's safe and effective use in the healthcare domain.

While approximately 15% of doctors already employ AI in practices or medical care centers, diagnostic support and practice management being common applications, the usage among clinic-based doctors stands at 18%. These medical professionals primarily use AI in imaging procedure evaluations.

"AI has the potential to make medical care more individualized and efficient, particularly in prevention and therapy, and can alleviate doctors' workloads through more accurate diagnoses, automated documentation, and intelligent appointment scheduling," explains Bitkom President Ralf Wintergerst.

Sixty-eight percent of respondents are open to the introduction of electronic patient records (EPRs), which they see as offering benefits such as the avoidance of duplicate examinations (73%), quicker diagnoses through access to medical histories (60%), and reduced medication interactions (59%). Nevertheless, 77% of respondents feel insufficiently prepared for EPR implementation, which was launched nationwide at the end of April following a test phase and remains voluntary for doctors, pharmacies, and hospitals until mandatory use from October 1, 2025. Patients can opt-out of the system actively.

Meanwhile, the path ahead for AI in German medicine is marked by ongoing research, development, and implementation across various applications. Focus areas include precision diagnostics, personalized therapy, and drug development. While the integration of AI with EPRs and data privacy-preserving technologies is crucial, efforts are being made to balance innovation with patient data protection.

The commitment to AI's future in healthcare is evident through planned investments and research, focusing on real-world clinical deployment, generative AI models, digital health innovation, and AI literacy among healthcare professionals. The integration of quantum computing with AI for more efficient diagnostics represents a promising frontier area. Regulatory and ethical frameworks around AI will evolve alongside technical development, emphasizing transparency, trust-building, and patient-centered outcomes.
