Massive Operation Dismantles International Phone Theft Gang in London
An international gang has been dismantled by London Metropolitan Police following a massive operation against mobile phone theft. The gang, responsible for a significant portion of smartphone thefts in London, was found to be smuggling devices to China.
The gang, which targeted high-priced Apple devices, is suspected of stealing up to 40,000 iPhones last year alone. This alarming figure represents approximately 40% of all phone thefts in London, which have nearly tripled in the past four years. The operation, the largest of its kind in the UK's history, resulted in the arrest of 18 suspects and the recovery of over 2,000 stolen iPhones.
The breakthrough in the case came when a victim used the 'Find My iPhone' feature on their stolen device, leading police to a warehouse where the gang was storing the loot. The gang would sell the stolen iPhones for up to £300 in the UK and up to £4,000 in China, where demand for these devices is high and regulations are less stringent.
The successful operation highlights the importance of using tracking features like Find My iPhone on smartphones and the collaborative effort between law enforcement and the public in combating smartphone theft. The gang's activities have been significantly disrupted, but investigations continue to identify and apprehend any remaining members.
