Mazda's Changan-produced EZ-60 SUV has reportedly surpassed 20,000 pre-orders since its premiere at the Shanghai auto show.

The Mazda EZ-60, a mid-size electric crossover SUV, has made a significant impact in China's automotive market, amassing over 26,000 pre-orders since its unveiling at Auto Shanghai 2025. Developed by Mazda through its joint venture with Changan Automobile, the EZ-60 is set to launch in September 2025.

This popular newcomer is available in both pure battery electric (BEV) and extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) configurations, offering consumers a range of options to suit their needs.

The EZ-60's exterior design seamlessly blends Mazda's "Kodo" aesthetic with a closed-off front fascia, illuminated accents, and aerodynamic enhancements, reducing drag and cabin noise. Inside, the SUV boasts a 5K panoramic touchscreen, an augmented reality head-up display (AR-HUD), a 23-speaker Dolby Atmos surround sound system, and an intelligent ambient lighting system, among other comfort features.

Performance-wise, the BEV version features a 190 kW electric motor, while the EREV variant uses the same motor with a 1.5-liter gasoline generator, offering around 160 km of pure electric range and a total driving range exceeding 1,200 km. The chassis is made from 86.5% high-strength steel, ensuring durability, and nine standard airbags meet China's 2026 EV battery safety rules.

The rapid pre-order success of the EZ-60 can be attributed to several factors. The combination of advanced technology, innovative safety features, and robust design appeals to consumers seeking modernity and innovation. Moreover, the availability of both BEV and EREV models addresses range anxiety concerns, particularly in areas with limited charging infrastructure. The EREV option extends the vehicle's range significantly, making it more appealing for long-distance driving.

China's growing demand for electric vehicles, coupled with the government's push for EV adoption, has created a favorable market environment. The EZ-60's success also reflects the growing trust in Mazda-Changan's joint ventures and their ability to deliver competitive products.

Following the EZ-60, Changan Mazda is planning to release three more models, according to the joint venture. Last week, CATL announced a new partnership with Changan Mazda to jointly build NEVs based on CATL's CIIC skateboard chassis. The official launch of the EZ-60 is expected by the end of August.

The EZ-60 marks Changan Mazda's second strategic model for the global market after the EZ-6 sedan. It was unveiled on the first day of the Shanghai auto show and began taking pre-orders on April 23, with over 10,000 pre-orders recorded in the first 48 hours. With such strong demand, the Mazda EZ-60 is poised to become a significant player in China's electric SUV market, challenging established brands and underscoring the success of Mazda's strategic partnership with Changan Auto in addressing local demand for innovative electric vehicles.
