Urgent Action Required: Alleviating Physician Shortages in Saxony-Anhalt

Saxony-Anhalt, a German state, is grappling with a scarcity of medical professionals. To combat this, a subsidy initiative—active for a year—provides financial aid to doctors who open new practices or continue existing ones in regions struggling with impending or existing shortages. Initial results indicate success, as per the Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians (SHI) in Saxony-Anhalt.

By April 30, 2025, approximately €950,000 out of the total €2.52 million available had been disbursed, accounting for nearly 38% of the funds. An additional €290,000 has been approved for more practice foundations. The SHI anticipates noticeable improvements in supply, particularly in ophthalmology in the Altmark, pediatrics in the Börde region, and various areas of general medicine.

This subsidy promotion is a small step in addressing the multitude of challenges ahead. A total of 45 applications for funding were submitted, with 29 approvals, four rejections, and the remaining applications withdrawn. Saxony-Anhalt's doctor shortages remain a critical concern, with an estimated 520 unfilled positions predicted in five years, more than doubling the current number. around 300 general practitioners are expected to retire by 2030.

Current strategies to address the shortage include recruitment and retention incentives, expansion of medical schools, enhanced specialization programs, the use of telemedicine, and the implementation of hybrid DRG models. Governments aim to achieve more efficient and flexible care delivery and target doctor shortages in key specialties such as general practitioners, ophthalmology, pediatrics, and child and adolescent psychiatry.
