Meta broadens its range of smart glasses, wagering on the upcoming era
In a significant stride for wearable technology, Meta has unveiled its latest innovation - the Ray-Ban meta glasses smart glasses. Since their launch in late 2023, more than 3.5 million pairs have been sold worldwide, making them the top-selling glasses globally.
The Ray-Ban Display meta glasses come with built-in screens, allowing wearers to view messages, photos, and more as if they were looking at a smartphone screen. This groundbreaking technology has been developed in partnership with EssilorLuxottica, the parent company of Ray-Ban and Oakley.
The Ray-Ban Display is accompanied by sensor-packed bracelets called neural bands, enabling control with subtle finger movements. Meta's current focus with these meta glasses is to break free from smartphone dependence and control its own destiny in wearables.
The new Ray-Ban meta glasses offer a range of features, including built-in cameras for hands-free photos or video, the ability to call on a digital assistant, and real-time language translation. They start at an affordable price of $379, making them accessible to a wide audience.
However, while the sales figures are impressive, analysts such as Leo Gebbie from CCS Insight have expressed doubts about the short-term profitability of Reality Labs, Meta's virtual and augmented reality unit, which lost $4.5 billion in the second quarter of this year on revenue of just $370 million.
Despite these challenges, Meta remains optimistic about the future of AI-infused meta glasses. Mark Zuckerberg, Meta's chief executive, predicted that these glasses will be the 'next major computing platform,' eventually replacing the smartphone. He envisions building great-looking meta glasses delivering personal superintelligence and a feeling of presence using realistic holograms.
The global meta glasses market was estimated at nearly $2 billion last year and is projected to reach $8.26 billion annually by the end of the decade, according to analytics firm Grand View Research. This growth suggests a promising future for Meta's Ray-Ban meta glasses, which aim to provide real-world superpowers by connecting users to a wealth of information while maintaining presence in the moment.
As Meta continues to invest heavily in virtual reality and the metaverse, with the company changing its name from Facebook to Meta in late 2021, it remains to be seen how these innovative meta glasses will shape the future of technology and communication.
