Microsoft's 'Portraits' Brings AI Interaction to Life with Realistic Avatars

Microsoft has rolled out a new feature, 'Portraits', for its Copilot AI assistant. This innovation brings AI interaction to a new level, offering users a range of stylized avatars that react with natural facial expressions and lip-sync, all from a single image. The feature is initially available to select users aged 18 and above, with daily time limits.

The 'Portraits' feature is powered by Microsoft's proprietary AI technology, Vasa-1. It offers 40 different avatars, including friendly-looking seniors and a young man in a plaid shirt. Users can interact with these avatars in real-time, seeing them react with human-like expressions. Microsoft ensures users are always aware they are conversing with AI.

Microsoft introduced 'Portraits' to make users more comfortable interacting with Copilot. The company aims to increase user productivity and creativity while automating or simplifying work processes. The idea for AI avatars was developed as part of Microsoft's ongoing efforts to make AI assistants more expressive and interactive. The feature is currently being trialed through Copilot Labs for select users in major markets.

The 'Portraits' feature is a cautious step by Microsoft to enhance user experience with its Copilot AI assistant. With a limited rollout and daily time limits, the company is mindful of potential consequences of excessive chatbot communication. Despite having fewer users worldwide compared to ChatGPT, Microsoft continues to innovate, aiming to make AI assistants more engaging and useful for users.
