Mumbai's Slum Rehabilitation Authority to deploy Artificial Intelligence for overseeing slums and preventing further unauthorized developments.

In a significant move towards improving urban management and planning, the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) in Mumbai has decided to leverage Artificial Intelligence (AI) to monitor slums and prevent new encroachments. This initiative aims to ensure the success of ongoing rehabilitation projects and make Mumbai a slum-free city.

The SRA has already successfully piloted this AI surveillance technology in Malwani, and following its success, the authority plans to deploy it citywide. A dedicated special cell will be set up to monitor the entire process and take immediate action against new slums that are detected.

Every six months, the SRA will capture photographs and videos of existing slums, analysing the data to identify any new unauthorised settlements. Upon detection, swift action will be taken to remove these new slums.

The AI-driven surveillance system enables regular, systematic surveys for new encroachments, enhancing the ability of authorities to enforce slum control efficiently and transparently. This approach leverages AI's capability to process image data and detect changes over time, providing an automated and scalable method for urban monitoring.

This initiative is part of Mumbai’s broader strategy to prevent illegal slum expansion and support rehabilitation efforts. By closely supervising slum areas, the SRA hopes to achieve its goal of making Mumbai a slum-free city. This move is expected to significantly improve urban management and planning in the bustling city.
