Municipal election disruption probed by police in Münster, Germany - no indications of a cyber strike found

In the city of Münster, the local elections held in 2024 experienced some technical difficulties, with disruptions in the display of election results between 6:00 PM and 10:00 PM. The Münster Police's Cybercrime division, one of six divisions operating in the police headquarters of Cologne, Düsseldorf, Dortmund, Essen, Bielefeld, and Münster since 2024, immediately launched an investigation following the IT disruption.

The investigation is focused on the city's IT service provider, Citeq, a municipal IT provider fully owned by the city of Münster. The Cybercrime division, consisting of IT specialists, analysts, and investigators, is currently investigating the cause of a server overload that occurred during the specified time period.

Initial findings by the investigators suggest no evidence of a cyberattack. However, the cause of the server overload is now the subject of further investigation. The election data was never at risk, ensuring the integrity of the voting process.

The intervention teams, part of the Cybercrime division, can quickly respond and begin work upon learning about an IT issue. For media inquiries, contact can be made at the Münster Police's phone number 0251-275-1010, email [email protected], or their website.

Some election results of municipalities in the Münsterland region could not be displayed due to the technical issues. The Münster Police assures the public that they are working diligently to resolve the issue and ensure the smooth running of the elections. As more information becomes available, updates will be provided.
