NBCUniversal, Google Strike Multi-Year Deal, Avoiding YouTube TV Blackout
NBCUniversal and Google have struck a multi-year carriage deal, preventing a blackout of NBCUniversal's channels on YouTube TV. This agreement, reached just in time for the NFL season and new primetime shows, secures continued access to a wide range of popular content.
The agreement, which covers NBCUniversal's full network portfolio including NBC, Telemundo, Bravo, and others, ensures that viewers can continue to enjoy their favourite shows and sports events on YouTube TV. Notably, the deal secures the distribution of NBC Sports Network later this year.
This pact also addresses growing tensions between programmers and distributors over the 'ingestion' of streaming services into third-party platforms. It could serve as a template for future negotiations between the two parties.
Universal Pictures films will remain accessible for purchase or rental on YouTube. Additionally, NBCUniversal will continue to distribute short-form clips, highlights, and library content through YouTube. Furthermore, Peacock, NBCUniversal's streaming service, will now be available as a subscription through YouTube's Primetime Channels, expanding its reach across Google's platforms.
This agreement reflects the ongoing balancing act between affiliate fees and direct-to-consumer streaming ambitions. It ensures that viewers can continue to enjoy a wide range of content, while also paving the way for future negotiations between programmers and platforms.
